Requiring a Restart
As a rule Each model undergoes through
some changes during its automobile life. Today,
the period of a single model life is about five years.
While the demand for it keeps for about two years
and then begins to fall. To keep up with the times
and maintain the level of sales the car makers
practice so-called "face lifting" – adding a change
in appearance or some unpdating. The decisions
for complete and complex update of LADA 2110
could not be found for a long time. The designers,
who now also took into account the commercial
side in the appearance of the car, presented six
options. The sixth one was Priora.
Detail Changes
Comparing to the model 2110, the car body
of Priora was fairly much better. The production
costs have also been minimized. Within a
short time, under difficult conditions AVTOVAZ
engineers have successfully made a car of high
quality. almost everything was Changed. There
was a new telescopic strut on the front suspension
arm. The upper support and the stiffness of the
coil springs has been changed as well. Best
practices have finally found a use in Priora. The
whole interior, including the dash panel, was fully
updated. The changes touched almost everything
except for the seats, the mechanism of which was
also improved. According to the results of all-
Russian competition In October 2007 Lada Priora
2170 objectively received the status of " Russian
brand No. 1". In addition to the basic sedan 2170,
there are also hatchback 2172 and wagon 2171.
The City Car
1117, 1118, 1119 (Kalina)
The development of a prototype of Kalina
first started in 1988. For realization Moscow
suggested an automobile plant in Elabuga. It
was a big project with a large annual production
volume. FIAT got really interested in the Project
and offered to cooperate. However, in view of the
events of 1991 the project was not accomplished.
The Style of a Smiling Dolphin
The administration of AVTOVAZ made a
decision to continue working on the project. The
basis had tp be taken from the eightmodel. It was
necessary to take the front-wheel-drive platform
and create on its basis the car of a segment B. It
got a name Kalina. Originally Kalina was created
as a hatchback, and ha an index 1119. There
were also sedan 1118 and wagon 1117 In the
family were. In the beginning though there was
another modification of minivan 1120, but it had
beed quickly refused. According to the concept
this car was made mostly to be driven in town. It
was compactly small outside, and very spacious
inside. Soft rounded shape and the same form of
lights were called "the style of a smiling dolphin".
The car had got renewed dashpanel entirely made
of polypropylene and doors upholstery made of
leather imitation. In the construction of Kalina
reflects all the modern standards of passive safety
and environmental norms. Its level is much higher
than previous models’. To summarize briefly, the
Kalina car family consists of three types (sedan,
hatchback and wagon), three versions (normal,
standard and luxe), each of bodies has two types
of engine, ABS and air conditioning. As the phrase
goes, the car fits every taste.
The Economy Class Car
2190 (Lada Granta)
Production Years: since 2011
Popular Name
Granta was the modernization of Kalina sedan
1118. It is a modern functional and comfortable
economy class car for a wide range of consumers.
The name of the car was chosen due to the annual
national competition. The name was picked from
several thousand variants. The winner of the
competition was a citizen of Krasnoyarsk.
The Similarity and Difference
About 400 of original components were
made specifically for Lada Granta. The car got
new front and rear wings, a bonnet, a trunk lid,
lightings, front and rear bumpers, a dash panel,
seats, upholstery, doors, a steering wheel, front
and rear glass, door seals. Granta first declared
itself as the car of economy class, the cheapest
in the line of AVTOVAZ. The great work on costs
reduction without loss of consumer properties and
quality was held by the engineers, workers and
designers. For the first time AVTOVAZ created
a special version of the car with the cheapest
option. However, the cheapest car in the line is
now significantly superior to the "classical” 2107
model.
Family Car
Lada Largus
Budget Segment
“Largus” from Greek means “generous”
which is absolutely fair as it is multi-purposed
budget wagon of increased capacity. Already
tried and tested Renault Logan MCV became the
prototype for Lada Largus. It became a cooperative
project of Renault-Nissan and AVTOVAZ. In spite
of enormous amount of work the preparations
for production operation took only two years. In
particular for this promising innovation three new
departments were built: welding, painting and
assembly. The first time the public had a chance
to see Lada Largus was in 2010 in Moscow,
though it hardly had had a name by then. The
car was humbly called as RF-90. The first Lada
Largus wagon model won recognition from the
public right away when it was first launched into
serial production on the 4th of April 2012.
Russian Spirit
The first comments on the VAZ innovation
were like this: “It has a real Russian spirit.” Its
first test-drive took place in Sosnovka, where
Largus was approved by about three dozen of
journalists from central and regional media who
became first testers of the car. They used the
car in every possible way: sped up to 180 km/h,
although the maximal stated speed was 160 km/h;
made it skidding; checked the ventilation and
climate control, and so on. The journalist didn’t
hesitate to check the capacity of the boot as well
- the result was impressive. The car turned out
to be really commodious meanwhile looking quite
compact. The true purpose of Lada Largus is to
be the automobile for all cases. It’s practically a
minivan, standard equipment of which has an air
conditioner, ABS, CD-MP3 audio system, driver
airbag, rear door locking, heating and washing
system of rear window and also hydraulic
amplifiers for the steering wheel.
On Tops
Largus Furgon and Largus Cross attracted
attention overnight. It’s a pleasure to point out
that these cars were presented at the “Interavto
– 2011” exhibition a year before. On the 23rd of
April 2015 Lada Largus Furgon won the annual
national award (âîò íå çíàþ êàê ñêàçàòü «íà
ïðåìèè») in the category “Minivans”. Currently
Furgon is a leader of the segment, leaving behind
Renault Kangoo Fourgon and Volkswagen Caddy.
Comparing to the wagon body on base of which
Largus Cross was projected Lada Largus Cross
of 2014 underwent a change: the whole running
gear was reconstructed. The signature moment
of the Lada Largus Cross interior is its design
– specifically bright orange and yellow inserts
integrated on the dashboard, door panels, rugs,
and passenger seats.
The President Car
On the 18th of June in St Petersburg the
president of AVTOVAZ JSC Bo Andersson
personally presented Lada Largus VIP. The most
comfortable Largus distinguishes widened space
for rear-seat passengers and factory blacked out
windows. Now the president Bo Andersson uses
Largus Cross VIP only.
